What are Harmonies?
Harmonies are combinations of different musical notes played or sung at the same time to support and enrich a melody. Harmony adds depth and fullness to music by creating chords and layered tonal relationships between notes.
In many songs, harmonies occur when multiple notes are performed alongside the main melody. For example, background singers may sing different notes that blend with the lead vocal, or instruments may play chords that support the melodic line.
Harmonies are often built using musical intervals and chord structures, which determine how notes relate to each other. These combinations can create different emotional qualities in music, such as tension, resolution, warmth, or brightness.
In modern music production, harmonies can be performed by vocalists, instruments, or virtual instruments within digital audio workstations such as Ableton Live, FL Studio, and Logic Pro. Producers often layer multiple parts together to create rich harmonic textures within a mix.
