Spotify Launches "Talk to Spotify," a Conversational AI Assistant for Premium Users

Spotify has rolled out a new conversational AI feature called "Talk to Spotify" that lets Premium subscribers ask the app to play music, answer questions about tracks, and explore their listening history via voice or text. The beta is available to 18‑plus users in the United States, Ireland and Sweden, and can be accessed from the Home screen or the Now Playing view on mobile devices.

The assistant combines Spotify’s internal catalog data with a large‑language model to respond to prompts such as "Play some artists I haven’t heard before," "Make it more upbeat," or "What genre is this?" It can also provide contextual trivia about albums and artists, and it can act as a year‑long Spotify Wrapped by answering questions like "When did I first listen to this track?" or "What genres have I been into recently?" The feature turns music discovery from a passive, algorithmic process into a back‑and‑forth dialogue.

For artists and labels, the new AI means that metadata accuracy and completeness become even more critical. According to the company’s own guidance, a track’s genres, moods, BPM, and credits are now essential pieces of conversational SEO. Distributors are urged to supply granular details before release day so the assistant can match user requests precisely. The feature also pulls from external sources such as Genius annotations, press releases, and Wikipedia, so off‑platform PR and short‑form video that teach fans how to prompt the assistant can influence engagement signals.

Spotify’s own data shows that the platform has more than 761 million monthly active users, of which 293 million are paying subscribers. The company has historically relied on algorithmic playlists like Discover Weekly and Release Radar to surface new music. "Talk to Spotify" replaces that passive model with a more personalized, conversational search that could level the playing field for niche artists who may not appear in mainstream editorial playlists.

The beta launch is part of a broader AI push that Spotify announced earlier this month. The company has also introduced AI‑powered features for podcasts and audiobooks, and it is experimenting with voice‑controlled playback and content discovery across its app. The conversational assistant is currently limited to Premium users, but the company has indicated that it may expand the feature to a wider audience in the future.

From a marketing perspective, the assistant requires artists to keep their Spotify bio up to date, use Spotify Clips and Canvas to keep listeners engaged on the Now Playing screen, and add songwriter and producer credits so the AI can answer questions about who produced a track. Because the assistant can ask follow‑up questions, artists who provide detailed, searchable information are more likely to be recommended when a listener asks for specific styles or moods.

The introduction of a ChatGPT‑style assistant also signals a shift in how streaming services measure success. Instead of relying solely on playlist placement, Spotify now rewards content that can be described accurately in natural language. This change may prompt labels to invest more in metadata services and in content that is easily indexed by large‑language models.

At present, "Talk to Spotify" remains in beta and is only available to a subset of Premium users. Spotify has not announced a full rollout timeline, but the company’s public statements suggest that the feature will be expanded as the underlying AI models are refined and as more users adopt the conversational interface.

In summary, Spotify’s new conversational AI assistant redefines music discovery on the platform, placing greater emphasis on metadata quality, off‑platform storytelling, and user‑generated prompts. Artists and labels that adapt to these requirements will be better positioned to appear in AI‑driven recommendations, while listeners gain a more interactive way to explore music and learn about the tracks they love.
