DJ Chris Cross Launches Terrific Tunes to Empower Independent Artists

In a city where beats meet business, DJ Chris Cross is redefining how independent musicians get heard. The Memphis‑born DJ and producer unveiled Terrific Tunes, a distribution and creative‑services platform that promises artists more control over their releases.

Terrific Tunes, headquartered in Memphis with an Atlanta office, offers a full‑stack service: global distribution, marketing, rights management, royalty tracking, editorial pitching, and metadata support. The platform currently partners with the technology distributor Too Lost, which delivers music to Spotify, Apple Music, TikTok, Amazon and over 450 other outlets. According to the company’s website, Terrific Tunes works with dozens of artists and hundreds of releases.

The model is straightforward. Artists keep 80 percent of revenue from streams and sales; Terrific Tunes takes a 20 percent cut for distribution, submission, and administrative services. The company stresses that artists retain ownership of their copyrights and that the relationship is built on clear communication and data‑driven insight. “I’m creating something that will last,” Chris Marshall said in a recent interview. “It’s bigger than just dropping music.”

Marshall’s background spans more than a decade of touring, DJing and media work. He began DJing in 2014 while attending the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff, where he studied mass communications and wrote for the campus newspaper. He later toured with hip‑hop acts such as Moneybagg Yo, Rod Wave, Yo Gotti and YTB Fatt, gaining firsthand knowledge of how shows, records and momentum flow in the industry. In 2018 he started building relationships with Memphis rap artists, learning how infrastructure—or the lack of it—can make or break a career.

“Relationship‑wise, when I connected with these people down the line, it was worth the risk,” Marshall said. He described the experience as an informal graduate program that taught him the importance of metadata, split sheets, publishing registration and revenue timelines. He noted that many independent artists upload music without planning, which can leave them vulnerable to manipulation and limited protection.

After moving to Atlanta, Marshall described the city as “the Music Hub of the South,” where business acumen and cultural timing shape what breaks next. He said the move helped him see how the industry operates on a larger scale and how a technical, durable model could serve artists better than traditional label deals.

Terrific Tunes’ services include uploading projects, organizing metadata, registering splits, communicating around releases, and helping artists understand the revenue cycle. The company also offers editorial pitching and marketing support, aiming to bridge the gap between independent creators and the broader industry infrastructure. “I feel like I’m solving a problem,” Marshall said. “An independent artist needs to operate like a business instead of just dropping music.”

The partnership with Too Lost is a key part of its distribution strategy. Too Lost is a technology‑driven distributor that delivers music to more than 450 outlets without intermediary fees. By leveraging Too Lost’s network, Terrific Tunes can offer artists a low‑cost, high‑reach distribution pipeline.

Marshall, a new member of the Recording Academy, has expressed a cautious view of emerging technologies. He said TikTok has changed discovery and that artificial intelligence is another tool artists will need to understand. “I don’t think AI is going to replace humans,” he said. “Humans are going to use it as a tool.”

He also highlighted the importance of intellectual property. “If you don’t understand the importance of your intellectual property, you can be easily manipulated,” Marshall said. He stressed that artists should be aware of the value of their work and the data that supports it.

Looking ahead, Marshall says Terrific Tunes is not aiming to become the biggest music company. Instead, the goal is to be impactful for independent creators. “We’re not trying to build the biggest music company,” he said. “We’re just trying to be impactful for independent creators.”

The launch of Terrific Tunes reflects a broader trend of independent artists seeking alternative distribution models that preserve ownership and provide transparent, data‑driven support. By combining DJ experience, industry knowledge and a technology partnership with Too Lost, the platform offers a practical bridge for artists who have music and an audience but need structure to navigate the digital marketplace.

As the music industry continues to evolve, platforms like Terrific Tunes provide a concrete example of how independent artists can maintain control over their work while accessing the same global distribution channels traditionally reserved for major labels.
