Andy Mineo and Wordsplayed Release Magic & Bird 2: What a Rush! - A New Chapter in Christian Hip-Hop

Andy Mineo and Christian rapper Wordsplayed have dropped their second collaborative mixtape, Magic & Bird 2: What a Rush!, on June 18 2026. The project, built around a pro‑wrestling theme, follows their 2017 debut Andy Mineo & Wordsplayed Present Magic & Bird and signals a shift in how the duo tackles Christian hip‑hop, business transparency and creative partnership.

Mineo first broke into the national scene when his 2014 EP Never Land earned Rap/Hip‑Hop Album of the Year at the 45th GMA Dove Awards. Since then he has collected four Dove Awards, while Wordsplayed has yet to receive one. Mineo’s early career was anchored at Reach Records, where he released Formerly Known (2013) and Uncomfortable (2015). In September 2024 he departed Reach to launch Miner League, a new venture that has signed Wordsplayed and other artists.

The duo explained that Magic & Bird 2 sprang from a shared love of wrestling. Wordsplayed recalled that, during the recording sessions, he and Mineo were binge‑watching VHS copies of The Sopranos, Adam Sandler movies and vintage WWF shows. “We organically landed on the album sounding like what we were enjoying,” he said. Mineo added that wrestling’s “boisterous, attitude‑heavy” style matched hip‑hop’s energy, making it a natural fit for the sequel.

Their creative process diverges from the first collaboration. Mineo described the partnership as a “flow state” that cuts through perfectionism. “When we collaborate, it really unlocks something for both of us,” he said. Wordsplayed noted that his own style is “play it as it lies,” favoring fewer takes, whereas Mineo often records dozens of takes to hit the desired sound. The collaboration shortens the cycle and, according to the duo, raises overall quality.

Both artists discussed what constitutes Christian hip‑hop. Mineo said the genre is defined by talking about Jesus, while Wordsplayed pointed to economics and labeling. “You get to categorize something, so you know what resources to funnel toward it and what market to aim it at,” Wordsplayed explained. They also touched on the challenges of being labeled “Christian,” with Mineo noting that faith and business can create “weirdness” when monetizing Christianity.

Mineo’s business philosophy centers on transparency. After building leverage through his releases, he secured a publishing admin deal with Sony Music, one of the three major publishers. He explained that the agreement allows him to bring collaborators—Wordsplayed and a frequent producer—onto the same contract. Mineo emphasized that he passes through the terms of the deal without carving out extra cuts, arguing that “no middleman” is fair to the artists.

The interview also revealed that Miner League does not market itself as a “Christian artist” label. “We are Christians, but we are not marketing ourselves as ‘Christian artists,’” Mineo said. The goal is to conduct business with clarity on cost, deliverables, and communication, avoiding “kingdom” favors that can lead to frustration.

Wordsplayed’s comedic flair remains a cornerstone of the duo’s brand. He said the album’s humor is a “party” that invites fans of faith, hip‑hop, and nostalgia. Mineo noted that the wrestling motif adds an absurd, funny layer that keeps listeners engaged.

Magic & Bird 2 illustrates how Christian hip‑hop artists navigate industry structures, creative collaboration, and business transparency. The duo’s approach to labeling, publishing, and partnership offers a model that balances faith‑based content with mainstream industry practices.

The mixtape is available on all major streaming platforms and is part of Miner League’s catalog. No further releases have been announced at this time.
