What is a VSTi?

A VSTi (Virtual Studio Technology Instrument) is a type of software instrument that generates sound within a digital audio workstation. It is a plugin format that allows musicians and producers to play virtual instruments directly inside music production software.

VSTi plugins can replicate the sound of traditional instruments such as pianos, guitars, drums, and orchestral instruments, or they can create entirely synthetic sounds using digital synthesis. These instruments are typically controlled using MIDI data from a MIDI keyboard, sequencer, or other controller.

Many VSTi instruments use sampled recordings of real instruments, while others generate sound using synthesis methods such as subtractive synthesis, wavetable synthesis, or frequency modulation. This allows producers to create a wide range of musical tones and textures.

VSTi plugins are commonly used in digital audio workstations such as Ableton Live, FL Studio, and Logic Pro. They allow producers to compose melodies, program instruments, and design sounds without needing physical hardware instruments.
