What is a Remix Stem?

A remix stem is an individual audio track from a song that is provided so producers can create a remix of the original recording. These stems allow remixers to work with specific parts of the song separately rather than using the full mixed track.

Remix stems often include elements such as vocals, drums, bass, synths, guitars, or other instruments from the original song. By isolating these components, producers can rearrange the track, add new sounds, change the tempo, or transform the song into a different genre.

Stems are usually exported so that all files begin at the same point in the timeline and match the same tempo and key. This makes it easy for remixers to import them into a project and have everything line up correctly.

Remix stems are commonly used in remix contests, DJ edits, and music production projects. Producers typically load stems into digital audio workstations such as Ableton Live, FL Studio, and Logic Pro where they can edit, rearrange, and process each element of the song independently.
