Universal Pictures Sets August 2027 Release for Snoop Dogg Biopic
Universal Pictures announced that its upcoming biopic of rapper Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., better known as Snoop Dog g, will open in theaters on August 6 2027. The film, titled Snoop, is slated to be an R‑rated drama that follows the artist’s early life in Long Beach, his rise to fame with Dr. Dre, and his later ventures into business, television and philanthropy.
The project brings together a notable creative team. Actor Jonathan Daviss, who is best known for his role in Netflix’s Outer Banks, will portray Snoop Dog g. The film is directed by Craig Brewer, whose previous work includes the music‑driven Hustle & Flow and the comedy Dolemite Is My Name. According to Variety, the studio confirmed the release date on Tuesday, July 21, describing the movie as the “definitive biopic of the artist, mogul and icon of gangsta rap.”
Snoop Dog g’s career spans more than three decades. He first gained national attention in 1992 with the single “Deep Cover” and the 1993 debut album Doggystyle, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. Over the years he has released chart‑topping albums such as Tha Doggfather (1996), R&G (Rhythm & Gangsta) (2004), and Reincarnated (2013) under the alias Snoop Lion. In addition to music, he has built a portfolio of entrepreneurial ventures, including a stake in the record label Death Row Pictures, a television production company, and various food and beverage brands.
The biopic is the first feature under a new overall deal between Death Row Pictures and NBCUniversal. Production is led by Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer, who previously produced 8 Mile, and by Snoop Dog g himself and Death Row Pictures president Sara Ramaker. No additional cast members have been announced, and a trailer has not yet been released.
Music biopics continue to attract audiences worldwide, with recent titles such as Straight Outta Compton and 8 Mile demonstrating the commercial viability of the genre. Universal has a history of successful musical dramas, and the studio’s decision to slot Snoop into its summer 2027 lineup follows a pattern of positioning biopics during peak theatrical windows.
