South Korea Launches 2026 Popular Music Practical Masterclass to Train Field-Ready Talent

South Korea is opening a new, industry‑focused training program that will transform music‑industry novices into ready‑to‑work professionals. The 2026 Popular Music Practical Masterclass, organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and hosted by the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA), will handpick 40 trainees for a ten‑day intensive course and a five‑month paid internship at a partner company. Applications are accepted until July 20, and the program runs from July 10 to July 20, 2026.

The initiative is a joint effort with the Korea Independent Label Association (LIAK), which will manage the internship phase. The curriculum blends classroom instruction with on‑site experience: trainees attend 60 lectures that cover the full spectrum of the popular‑music business—from A&R and artist management to music production, digital distribution, copyright, contracts, marketing, viral promotion, global expansion, and AI‑driven content creation. In addition to lectures, the course offers portfolio production, special talks by industry experts, and a chance to observe a Live Club Day event.

The four‑week training phase delivers practical theory and field learning. Participants receive laptops for the duration of the program, and the internship wages are set at the 2026 minimum wage. The five‑month internship, which follows the training, is paid and includes coverage of the four major social insurances, as the program organizers stated. Trainees will be matched with one of more than 60 LIAK member companies—including independent labels, distributors, and performance‑production firms that are leaders in the Korean music market.

Upon completing the internship, trainees earn a certificate of completion. Outstanding participants may receive prizes and formal employment offers from partner companies. The program is part of a broader workforce‑training initiative hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and organized by KOCCA, aimed at strengthening the domestic creative‑content ecosystem and supporting the export of Korean music.

An official spokesperson for the program explained, "This is a course where participants can learn the overall popular music business, from A&R and distribution to performances, marketing, and global expansion, all at once, while gaining experience at actual companies. We hope for strong interest from applicants preparing for employment in the music industry." The spokesperson did not provide a name.

Applications can be submitted through the program’s KakaoTalk Channel or Plus Friend. Interested candidates should search for "Popular Music Practical Masterclass" on KakaoTalk to access the application form and additional information. Contact details for the program are listed as joonamana@hanteo.com.

The initiative reflects a growing trend in South Korea to formalize music‑industry training and create clear pathways for newcomers. By combining classroom learning with real‑world internships, the program seeks to produce talent that is immediately employable in a highly competitive market. The inclusion of AI content‑production modules also signals the industry’s recognition of emerging technologies as integral to music creation and distribution.

As the program opens its doors to a new cohort of trainees, industry observers will watch how the partnership between government, KOCCA, and LIAK shapes the next generation of Korean music professionals. The outcome of the 2026 Popular Music Practical Masterclass could set a precedent for similar training models in other creative sectors across the country.
