Yangon Region Music Association Launches First Singing Contest for Myanmar Music Day

On 27 June, the Yangon Region Music Association (YRMA) opened its doors to the nation’s budding singers with a debut contest that coincided with the annual Myanmar Music Day celebrations. The event unfolded at Dolphin Hall in Bahan Township, Yangon, under the auspices of the Myanmar Music Association (Central). Its purpose was clear: to spot and nurture the next wave of Myanmar’s musical talent while reinforcing the cultural importance of the day.

The contest drew 114 contestants hailing from 25 townships across Yangon Region. After a series of preliminary rounds, 28 musicians advanced to the final stage, where five top performers were crowned winners and presented with awards. YRMA Chairman Ko Latt, who opened the ceremony, noted, "In order to develop the music industry, township and regional music associations were established this year and our association is one of these. This is the first time of holding a singing contest by our association. Through this competition, I hope that unity and friendship of the entire nation will be strengthened."

Among the finalists was Phway Phway from Thaketa Township, who shared her excitement: "I tried my best during the competition and I grabbed the winner award for my township. In this Music Day, I am really honour to be here for meeting with elder musicians. In the future, I will try to show my abilities to the audiences." Her words echoed the event’s aim to bridge generations of musicians.

Myanmar Music Day, observed every 27 June, marks the 1936 adoption of the “Dobama” song as the national anthem during the second Dobama Asiayon Conference in Myingyan. The Myanmar Music Association officially designated the date in 2013 to preserve the nation’s musical heritage and spirit of nationalism. Complementing the contest, a Respect‑Paying Ceremony honored 158 senior musicians with cash assistance and other items. Musician Than Tun Lay reflected, "At the invitation of Myanmar Music Association (Central), I’m here to attend the Respect‑Paying Ceremony to elder musicians. When I was young, there had a rare chance to compete in the singing competitions. But, today’s young individuals who are interested in music have a lot of opportunities to be a good musician."

Financial backing for the day came from multiple sources. President U Min Aung Hlaing and his wife donated 10 million kyats, presented to the Myanmar Music Association (Central) during the ceremony. Additional contributions from the Ministry of Information, the Yangon Region Government, and private donors raised total donations to over 31 million kyats, earmarked for supporting musicians and future music‑related initiatives.

The contest and its accompanying ceremonies underscore YRMA’s commitment to fostering musical talent and preserving Myanmar’s cultural heritage. By offering a competitive platform and financial support, the association seeks to strengthen the music community and encourage collaboration across townships and regions.

As the day concluded, the winners were announced and awards presented, followed by a collective performance that showcased the diversity of Myanmar’s musical traditions. YRMA plans to hold the contest annually, aiming to build a sustainable pipeline of musicians who can contribute to the country’s evolving music industry.

The 27 June celebrations marked a significant step for the Yangon Region Music Association, establishing a new tradition that aligns with the broader goals of the Myanmar Music Association to promote music education, support musicians, and honor the nation’s musical heritage.
