What is Panning?

Panning is the process of placing a sound within the left and right channels of a stereo audio field. It determines where an instrument or audio signal appears to come from when listening through speakers or headphones. By adjusting the pan control, a sound can be positioned fully to the left, fully to the right, or anywhere in between.

In music production, panning helps organize elements within a mix so that different instruments do not overlap too much in the center. For example, a producer might place one guitar slightly to the left and another slightly to the right while keeping the lead vocal in the center. This creates a more balanced and spacious stereo image.
