What is OTT (Over-The-Top Compression)?
OTT, short for Over-The-Top Compression, is a type of aggressive multiband compression used in music production to dramatically increase the presence, brightness, and intensity of a sound. It works by simultaneously compressing and expanding different frequency ranges, making quiet details louder while tightly controlling louder peaks.
OTT processing typically splits audio into multiple frequency bands—such as low, mid, and high frequencies—and applies heavy upward and downward compression to each band independently. Upward compression boosts quieter elements in the signal, while downward compression reduces louder peaks. This combination creates a highly controlled, dense sound where subtle details become much more noticeable.
The effect became especially popular in electronic music production because it can make synths, basses, and leads sound louder, sharper, and more energetic without needing multiple separate plugins. OTT can add brightness, sustain, and perceived loudness to sounds, making them cut through a mix more clearly.
Many producers associate OTT with the preset included in the multiband compressor plugin from Xfer Records, which helped popularize the effect in modern electronic music workflows. Today, OTT-style compression is commonly used in genres such as EDM, dubstep, trap, and future bass, though it is usually applied carefully to avoid making a mix sound overly harsh or compressed.
