What is Lookout Records?
Lookout Records was an independent record label based in Berkeley, California, known for its role in the punk rock and pop-punk scenes of the late 1980s and 1990s. It was founded in 1987 by Larry Livermore and David Hayes.
Lookout Records became influential for releasing music from emerging punk bands and helping shape the sound of American pop-punk. The label focused on raw, energetic music and supported underground artists during a time when punk was largely outside the mainstream.
One of the most notable bands associated with Lookout Records is Green Day, whose early releases on the label helped launch their career before they signed with a major label. Lookout also worked with bands like Operation Ivy and Screeching Weasel.
The label played a key role in building the independent punk scene by distributing music, organizing shows, and fostering a DIY (do-it-yourself) approach to music production and promotion.
Lookout Records eventually ceased operations in the early 2010s, but its influence remains significant in punk and indie music history, particularly for its contribution to the rise of pop-punk and independent music culture.
