What is Key Tracking?
Key Tracking is a synthesis feature that adjusts a parameter based on the pitch of the note being played. It is known for maintaining consistency and balance across different parts of the keyboard.
The process typically involves linking a parameter—such as filter cutoff, envelope amount, or modulation depth—to the keyboard’s note position, so that higher notes and lower notes respond differently.
Key Tracking emphasizes tonal consistency, ensuring that sounds behave naturally across the full range of an instrument. For example, it can make higher notes brighter by increasing filter cutoff or keep timbre uniform by scaling parameters proportionally with pitch.
It is commonly used in synthesizers and samplers to preserve realism, especially when emulating acoustic instruments or designing expressive patches.
Today, Key Tracking is widely used in sound design and music production, valued for its ability to create balanced, responsive, and musically coherent sounds across the keyboard.
