What is K Records?
K Records is an independent record label based in Olympia, Washington, known for its influence on indie music and the DIY (do-it-yourself) music movement. It was founded in 1982 by Calvin Johnson.
K Records became associated with the lo-fi and indie pop scenes, emphasizing raw, authentic recordings and artistic independence over commercial production. The label encouraged musicians to create and release music outside of the traditional major label system.
The label has released music from a wide range of influential indie artists, including Beat Happening, The Microphones, and early work connected to Modest Mouse. K Records helped shape the sound and philosophy of independent music in the United States.
K Records is also known for promoting a strong DIY ethic, encouraging artists to record at home, self-produce their music, and maintain creative control. This approach influenced many later indie and underground music communities.
Today, K Records continues to operate as an independent label, releasing music and supporting artists while maintaining its original focus on creativity, independence, and alternative music culture.
