What is Gain?
Gain refers to the amount of amplification applied to an audio signal. It increases the strength of the signal coming from a source such as a microphone, instrument, or audio device before it is processed, recorded, or played back.
In recording and sound systems, gain is often adjusted using a preamp or gain control knob. This control determines how much the incoming signal is boosted so that it reaches an appropriate level for recording or further processing.
Proper gain adjustment is important for maintaining clean audio. If the gain is set too low, the signal may sound weak or noisy, while setting the gain too high can cause distortion or clipping. Managing gain levels correctly helps ensure clear and balanced audio throughout the recording or mixing process.
