What is BMG?

BMG, short for Bertelsmann Music Group, is a global music company involved in music publishing and recorded music. Originally founded in 1987 as part of the German media company Bertelsmann, BMG became one of the major players in the international music industry.

BMG was historically one of the “big five” record labels and worked with a wide range of artists across genres. Over time, the company underwent major changes, including a merger with Sony Music in 2004 to form Sony BMG, which was later restructured.

In its modern form, BMG operates as a music rights management company, focusing on both publishing and recordings. Unlike traditional record labels, BMG emphasizes a more transparent and artist-friendly business model, often allowing artists to retain greater ownership of their music rights.

BMG works with songwriters and artists to manage publishing rights, licensing, and distribution. Its catalog includes a wide range of music spanning multiple decades and genres.

Today, BMG continues to play an important role in the music industry, offering services related to music publishing, licensing, and rights management while operating alongside other major companies in the global music business.
