What is a Tingsha?

A Tingsha is a pair of small, hand-held cymbals used in Tibetan Buddhist rituals, meditation, and sound healing practices. It is a type of idiophone that produces sound when the two cymbals are struck together.

The instrument consists of two metal discs, typically made from a bronze alloy, connected by a leather or cord strap. Each cymbal is carefully crafted to produce a clear, high-pitched tone.

A Tingsha is played by gently striking the cymbals together, creating a bright, ringing sound that can sustain for several seconds. The tone is pure and penetrating, often used to focus attention.

In spiritual settings, Tingsha are used to mark the beginning or end of meditation sessions, clear space, or accompany chanting and rituals. The sound is believed to promote mindfulness and clarity.

Today, Tingsha are widely used beyond religious contexts in yoga, meditation, and wellness practices, appreciated for their clean, resonant tone and calming effect.
