What is a Khol?
A Khol is a traditional double-headed drum from India, particularly associated with devotional music in regions such as West Bengal and Assam. It is a type of membranophone known for its bright, expressive sound.
The instrument typically has a terracotta or wooden body with a distinctive shape—one end is larger for bass tones, while the other is smaller for higher-pitched sounds. Each side has a drumhead made from layers of skin and paste to enhance tonal quality.
A Khol is played with the hands and fingers, allowing for a wide range of tones and rhythmic patterns. The contrasting heads enable both deep, resonant bass and sharp, articulate treble sounds.
It is commonly used in devotional and classical music, especially in kirtan (religious singing), where it accompanies chanting and dance.
Today, the Khol remains an important instrument in Indian musical and spiritual traditions, valued for its dynamic sound and its role in devotional expression.
