What is a Janggu?
A Janggu is a traditional Korean double-headed drum known for its hourglass shape and wide range of expressive sounds. It is a type of membranophone used in both court and folk music.
The instrument consists of a hollow wooden body with drumheads stretched over both ends, connected by tension cords that help control tuning and tone.
A Janggu is played with two different sticks—one for each side—allowing the performer to produce contrasting sounds. One side creates deep, resonant tones, while the other produces sharper, higher-pitched strikes.
It is commonly used in Korean traditional ensembles, dance, and folk performances, where it plays both rhythmic and expressive roles.
Today, the Janggu remains one of the most important instruments in Korean music, valued for its versatility, dynamic range, and its ability to convey both rhythm and emotion.
