What is a Ikoro?
An ikoro is a large traditional slit drum from the Igbo people of Nigeria. It is a wooden percussion instrument used primarily for communication and ceremonial purposes.
The ikoro is carved from a massive tree trunk and hollowed out, with slits cut into the top to allow the wood to resonate when struck. It is typically played with heavy wooden sticks.
Unlike smaller drums used mainly for music, the ikoro produces deep, powerful sounds that can travel long distances. It was historically used to send messages, announce important events, or call communities together.
The instrument also plays a role in cultural ceremonies, festivals, and traditional performances, where it provides rhythm and symbolic significance.
Today, the ikoro remains an important cultural symbol in Igbo society and is preserved in traditional settings, representing both musical heritage and community communication.
