What is a Ghungroo?
A ghungroo is a traditional South Asian percussion accessory consisting of small metal bells strung together on a cord or fabric. It is commonly worn around the ankles by dancers.
Ghungroos produce a jingling, rhythmic sound when the wearer moves their feet. The bells resonate with each step, helping to emphasize rhythm and timing in dance performances.
They are widely used in classical Indian dance forms such as Kathak, Bharatanatyam, and Odissi, where precise footwork is an essential part of the performance.
In addition to dance, ghungroos are sometimes used in music and devotional settings, adding a bright, percussive texture to the sound.
Today, ghungroos remain an important cultural element in South Asian performance arts and are also incorporated into world music and modern productions for their distinctive rhythmic sound.
