What is a Dhak?
A Dhak is a large traditional drum from the Indian subcontinent, especially associated with Bengal, where it is prominently used during festivals and religious celebrations. It is a type of membranophone known for its loud, energetic sound.
The instrument typically consists of a large cylindrical wooden body with drumheads stretched over both ends, often secured with ropes for tension. It is usually hung from the shoulders or mounted on a stand while being played.
A Dhak is played with curved sticks, producing powerful, rhythmic beats that can vary in intensity and speed. The sound is deep and booming, with sharp accents that cut through crowds.
It is most famously used during the Durga Puja festival, where drummers perform intricate and lively rhythms that create a festive and dynamic atmosphere.
Today, the Dhak remains a symbol of celebration and cultural identity in Bengal, valued for its strong rhythmic presence and its role in traditional festivities.
