What is a Cuíca?
A Cuíca is a Brazilian friction drum known for its distinctive squeaking or laughing sound, commonly used in samba music. It is a type of membranophone that produces sound through friction rather than direct striking.
The instrument typically consists of a small cylindrical drum with a single drumhead and a thin stick attached to the inside of the membrane. The stick passes through the center of the drumhead into the interior.
A Cuíca is played by rubbing the internal stick with a damp cloth while applying pressure to the drumhead from the outside with the fingers. This creates a range of pitch-bending, vocal-like sounds.
The sound can vary from high-pitched squeaks to deeper groans, depending on the pressure and speed of the rubbing motion. It is often used to add playful and expressive elements to music.
Today, the Cuíca is a signature instrument in Brazilian samba ensembles and is also used in various styles of world music for its unique and highly expressive tone.
