What is a Bianzhong?

A bianzhong is a traditional Chinese percussion instrument consisting of a set of bronze bells suspended in a wooden frame. It is one of the oldest known musical instruments in China and was historically used in ceremonial and court music.

Each bell in a bianzhong is carefully cast and tuned to produce specific pitches. Unlike many bells, a single bianzhong bell can produce two different tones depending on where it is struck, allowing for a wider range of notes within the set.

The bells are arranged in rows and are struck with mallets to create melodies and harmonic patterns. The instrument can cover a broad pitch range and was often used in ensembles to perform complex compositions.
