What is a Bak?
A bak is a traditional percussion instrument used in Korean music, specifically a type of wooden clapper. It is most commonly associated with ceremonial and court music in Korea.
The bak is made of several flat wooden slats bound together, which are struck against each other to produce a sharp, loud clapping sound. This sound is used to signal important moments within a performance.
In traditional Korean court music, the bak is often used by a conductor or leader to mark the beginning or end of a piece, as well as to cue transitions. Its strong, clear sound helps coordinate musicians and maintain structure in the performance.
Unlike many percussion instruments that provide continuous rhythm, the bak is primarily used for signaling rather than ongoing musical accompaniment.
Today, the bak remains an important part of traditional Korean performances and is still used in ceremonial music, preserving its historical and cultural significance.
