What are Overhead Mics?
Overhead mics are microphones placed above a sound source, most commonly above a drum kit, to capture the overall sound and balance of the instruments from a higher position.
In drum recording, overhead microphones are used to capture elements such as cymbals, hi-hats, and the natural blend of the entire drum kit. They help provide a sense of space and stereo image that complements the close microphones placed on individual drums.
Overhead mics are typically mounted on boom stands positioned above the drummer and are often arranged in stereo configurations such as XY, spaced pair, or ORTF. This technique is widely used in studio recording and live sound to create a more natural and cohesive drum sound.
